Ascribable:

  • Capable of being assigned to.
  • Attributable to.

Assertive: someone having or showing a confident and forceful personality.

Avert:

  • prevent something bad from happening

    Crisis averted

  • turn away eyes or thoughts

Attrition: departure of employees from the organization for any reason (resignation, retirement, ...).

B

Back-burner: a condition of low priority or temporary deferment Usually used in the phrase "put sth on the back burner"

Barring: except if a particular thing happens

We should arrive at 10am, barring any unexpected delay.

Bespoke: something (e.g. a solution or implementation) done for a particular use or customer

Beyond (all) reason: beyond the limit of what is reasonable => to a excessive degree

Bummer: disappointing

Caveat: a warning, a limitation of a general behaviour

Churn: something changing often, figurative for "agitation, mixing"

If customers churn between different companies that provide a particular service, they change repeatedly from one to another.

Clunky: when a proper flow is lacking in writing.

Coalesce: to unite into a whole, to combine. Ita: Fondere

Cohort: a group of people with similar characteristic

Conflate: combine two or more set of information into one

Contingent:

  • occurring only if something else happens; dependent on
  • depending on something else in the future in order to happen
  • subject to chance

    Contingent on the weather

Copacetic: in perfect order, completely satisfactory.

Cutover / cut over: change from an old (computer) system to a new one

Deemed:

  • to consider or judge something in a particular way

Deceive: Persuade someone that something false is the truth or keep the truth hidden (similar to misleading, delude).

Delude: NOTE: it is NOT Italian Deludere (that means "disappointing"). Make (someone) believe something that is not true.

Discounted: disregarded, discarded

Enunciate: say or pronounce clearly

Entail: consist in, require or involve as a consequence

Flaky: breaking easily (fragile)

Go through: (for a document) search through or examine methodically

Gratuitous: done without a good reason, unjustified

Grok: understand (something) intuitively or by empathy, assimilate, fully comprehend "I am trying to grok ..."

Hoist:

  • lift vertically, raise something, either physically or figuratively.

  • data hoisting (javascript): move declaration of variables and functions to the top of the current scope - this allows variables to be used before their declaration.

Lenient: more tolerant, not as severe or strong in punishment or judgement.

Lingo: a foreign language or local dialect - jargon.

Lookaside: The technique of searching for something in a precalculated cache before attempting a more time-consuming search elsewhere.

Hiccup: (figurative) a temporary or minor problem

Hinder: make it difficult, (for someone) to do sth, for sth to happen

Holistic: parts of something are intimately interconnected, and should be viewed as a whole.

Hubris: excessive pride or self-confidence

Idiosyncrasy:

  • Personal peculiarity, mode of behaviour, or way of thought unique to someone.

  • (Medical) An abnormal physical reaction by an individual to a food or drug.

Inconsequential: irrelevant, making no difference, not important, that can be ignored.

Jeopardize: put (someone or something) into a situation in which there is a danger of loss, harm, or failure.

Kosher: Satisfying the requirements, legitimate.

Mangle: Ruin or spoil (a text, a file, ...)

Moot: Something suggested up for discussion, often discussed

Musing: a period of reflection or thought

Numeral: a symbol, name, or phrase that stands for a number

Offhand: without looking for information and without thinking carefully; immediately:

Overcommit: allow use of more resources than what it is actual available

Oversubscribe: allow provision of more resources than what is actually available

Pitfall: a hidden or unsuspected danger or difficulty

Peruse: read something in a careful way, examine carefully

Prandial: related to a meal (lunch or dinner)

Precis: a summary about a speech, text, ...

Predate: (pre-date!) exist or occur at a date earlier than (something).

Prescient: showing knowledge of events before they happen. ita: premonitore, lungimirante.

Prescriptive: Imposing a rule or method. Saying exactly what must be done. "I don't want to be prescriptive"

Punt: (fig.) decide not to do or include something

Purview: the scope, the responsibility - boundaries of what is covered in a specific situation - ita: ambito

Relentless: unceasingly intense

Reluctant: unwilling and hesitant (ita: restio).

Rundown: detailed report, summary of something

Seize: hold sth suddenly, decisively, strongly. Ita: Afferrare

Sharding: (computer engineering)

  • method of splitting and storing a single logical dataset in multiple databases
  • horizontal partition of data in a database

Simplicistic: not to be confused with simplified

  • treating complex issues and problems as if they were much simpler than they really are.

Simplified:

  • make (something) simpler or easier to do or understand.

Snail mail: ordinary mail (as opposed to email)

Sloppy:

  • very wet
  • loose
  • untidy
  • inaccurate

Straddle: (ita: stare a cavallo, accavallare, unire con un ponte)

Straw man proposal: initial proposal intended to start a discussion / kick off a larger project

Stumped: unable to answer a question / solve a problem, because it is too difficult

Tenure: the period of time when someone holds a job

Thrill: a sudden feeling of excitement and pleasure.

Thunk: (computer engineering) a subroutine used for additional calculation, delay a calculation. Similar to worker thread / callback

Troublesome: causing difficulty or annoyance.

Turnaround: the process of completing or the time needed to complete a task, especially one involving receiving something, processing it, and sending it out again.

Vernacular: language flavor, dialect - language used every day in a specific community.

Vestigial:

  • (biology) functionless, serving no purpose.

  • something that has become obsolete.

  • having no practical purpose, application, or interpretation.

Vetted: carefully examined, investigated

Whim: mild inclination or weak desire.

Whimsical: playful, and unpredictable person.
